When a previous joint replacement needs further treatment
Total hip and knee replacement may sometimes need to be re-done. This usually happens many years after the surgery, or in some cases early due to fracture, infection or improper positioning of implants.
Revision surgery is usually more complex than the primary surgery. It requires special techniques to remove implants and use specialised revision implants.
Why might a joint replacement need revision?
Revision surgery may be considered for:
Not every painful joint replacement requires further surgery. Investigations such as X-rays, blood tests, CT scans or other specialised tests may be required to determine the cause of your symptoms.
What does revision surgery involve?
Revision surgery varies considerably between patients.
In some cases, only one component may need to be replaced. In others, the existing implants may need to be removed and a more extensive reconstruction performed using specialised revision implants.
Bone grafts or additional fixation may occasionally be required where there has been significant bone loss.
I'll explain the proposed procedure, alternatives, expected recovery and individual risks with you before surgery.
Recovery
Recovery following revision surgery is highly individual and may take longer than after a first hip or knee replacement.
Your rehabilitation, weight-bearing and return to activities will depend on the procedure performed and the condition of your bone and surrounding tissues.
My team and I will guide you through each stage of your recovery.
I operate out of two private hospitals with 24 hr Emergency services- Greenslopes Pvt Hospital and St Andrew’s War Memorial Hospital, Spring Hill. You can present to any of these in case of urgent issues.
My approach to your care
Revision joint replacement requires careful investigation, planning and an individualised surgical approach.
My priority is to understand why your previous joint replacement is causing problems and determine the most appropriate treatment for you. Where revision surgery is required, I'll discuss your options clearly so you understand what the procedure involves and what you can realistically expect from your recovery.
