Knee Arthroscopy & Meniscal Surgery

Walking, climbing stairs, exercising or playing sport might be challenging when your knee hurts. Some individuals may have discomfort from a damaged meniscus, loose cartilage, inflammatory joint lining or other issues within the knee.

Knee arthroscopy may be an effective minimally invasive treatment to diagnose and treat specific knee diseases when suitable.  Our goal is to decrease your discomfort, enhance knee function and restore you safely to your daily activities.

What is knee arthroscopy?

Knee arthroscopy is a minimally invasive treatment performed via 2 or 3 tiny incisions around the knee.  Then I put a tiny camera (arthroscope) into the joint and I can look at the structures within the knee. Then specialized equipment are utilized to address the underlying issue.

For many patients, arthroscopy often results in fewer incisions, less disturbance of soft tissue and a faster recovery than standard open surgery.

What is a ligament stabilization?

Ligament stabilization is a procedure to reattach or repair the ligaments on the outside of the ankle and restore stability. Most patients have their existing ligaments tightened and re-attached (Broström repair). If the ligaments are badly injured, a tendon transplant or synthetic augmentation may be needed.

What does meniscus surgery involve?

The menisci are two crescent-shaped segments of cartilage that provide stress absorption between the thigh bone and shin bone.

Sports injury or the slow aging process may tear a meniscus.  Depending on the kind, size and location of the tear, therapy may include:

The meniscus, when suitable, is best left in place since it serves a crucial function in protecting the knee joint.

Who can benefit?

Knee arthroscopy may be useful for certain individuals who have:

Persistent knee issues that have not responded to adequate non-surgical therapy.
Not every cause of knee pain is suitable for arthroscopy. For individuals with severe knee arthritis, non-surgical treatment or knee replacement may be more suitable. During our session I will analyze your symptoms, check your knee and study your imaging to identify the most appropriate therapy for you.

What is done during the surgery?

Several tiny incisions are made around the knee and the surgery is conducted under anesthetic.  I use a high resolution camera to look inside the joint thoroughly and then address the issue that I have detected. Depending upon your situation, this may require mending a torn meniscus, removing unstable pieces or treating damaged cartilage.
The technique is customized to your condition and objectives.

Postoperative recovery

Recovery varies on the ailment being treated and the operation performed.
Many patients are able to ambulate on the day after surgery although activity may need to be limited for a period of time

The recovery period after meniscal repair is usually longer than that after partial meniscectomy because the restored tissue has to mend.  Physiotherapy is typically a key aspect in regaining knee mobility, strength and function. We’ll develop a tailored rehabilitation plan and track your progress as you recover.

What are the dangers?

Like many surgeries, knee arthroscopy involves possible hazards, including:

During your session I will talk to you about the hazards that are relevant to your particular situation.

My approach to your care

However, not all patients with knee discomfort need surgery.  I will take a thorough history of your symptoms, check your knee and study your imaging and then prescribe the right therapy pathway. If surgery is required, my goal is to retain as much healthy tissue as possible, while permitting you to safely resume your daily routines and sport.

My staff and I am dedicated to delivering you personalized, evidence-based treatment from your first consultation through to your rehabilitation and throughout your recovery.
